Refresher Course in Library and Information Science, Calicut University from 5th-25th January 2010

The UGC-Academic Staff College, University of Calicut is conducting a three week Practical Oriented Refresher Course in Library and Information Science from 5th to 25th January 2010. The course aims at imparting practical oriented knowledge to the participants in the application of information and communication technologies in library operations and services with sufficient laboratory sessions.

The course contents will include

Web 2.0, etc.

Applications, duly approved by the Principal/Head of the College/Department concerned, are invited on the prescribed form from eligible and interested candidates. TA and DA will be given to the participants as per UGC rules.

6-Day International Workshop on Greenstone at IIMK, 23-28 November 2009

Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) is organizing a six-day International Workshop on Greenstone Digital Library Software at IIM Kozhikode during November 23-28, 2009.

FOR WHOM

The programme would be of interest to librarians, information professionals, IT faculty and software professionals belonging to the Academia, Government and NGOs in India and those from other countries.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the Workshop is to conduct a 6-day high-end training programme on Digital Libraries on the Open Source Software 'Greenstone' at IIM Kozhikode. Greenstone is a top of the line and internationally renowned Open Source Software system for developing digital libraries, promoted by the New Zealand Digital Library project research group at the University of Waikato. Greenstone is now promoted worldwide, especially among developing countries, by the UNESCO. IIMK hosts the Greenstone Support for South Asia region .

COVERAGE

The Workshop shall facilitate the participants in creating state-of-art digital libraries using the Greenstone Open Source DL software, which include software installation, configuration, customization, digitization and other related workflow operations, content development and management, designing and creating standard metadata sets to describe digital objects and encoding it in standard markup formats

PEDAGOGY

The workshop will be conducted at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) which is equipped with world-class lecture rooms and computing laboratories with high speed Internet link. Each participant will be provided a PC supplemented with LCD projected demos. The pedagogy will be a mix of Lectures, Discussions, Case studies and Hands - on Sessions. Each participant shall also be provided with a CD-ROM comprising of the Greenstone Software, faculty presentations, and other related software packages. Extensive hands-on labs will be a hall mark of this programme.

This programme will be held during November 23 - 28, 2009 at IIMK Campus, Kunnamangalam, Calicut. Accommodation will be provided on a twin sharing basis in the IIMK Guest Houses.
